For the past four years, Nassau NYSCAME, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, has sponsored a Faculty Study Tour during the February Recess. Teachers have travelled to Vienna/Prague/Budapest(2008), Venice/Florence/Rome(2009), Spain/Morroco(2010), Amsterdam/Paris (2011), and Turkey (2012) exploring these culturally fascinating areas.

THIS YEAR'S NYSCAME/MYO STUDY TOUR
During the 2012 February Break (Feb 17-26) 27 teachers and friends will be exploring the facinating country of Turkey. This country of art, architecture and music will provide a cultural feast to fill the artistic appetite. We have really great hotels booked in three Turkish locations and we are adding two meals daily to the tour for everyone.

Day 1 Friday, February 17, 2012 Depart JFK
Depart Turkish Air Flight #2 at 4:45 pm from NYC-JFK. The overnight flight takes you non-stop to Istanbul. In-flight
Day 2 Saturday, February 18, 2012 Arrival|Istanbul
Arrive at İstanbul Airport. Purchase your US $20 arrival Visa in cash and meet your guide before proceeding to the hotel. In the afternoon, embark on a private cruise along the straits of Bosphorus. See many fascinating pavilions, palaces and classical wooden Turkish villas. After the cruise, visit the Spice Bazaar near the Galata Bridge. B/D
Day 3 Sunday, February 19, 2012 Istanbul
After breakfast, visit the Hippodrome; the remnant of an arena built in the reign of Septimus Severus. Take a step into the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum; praised as one the best museums in Europe. Next visit the 17th century Blue Mosque, so called due to its more than 20,000 blue İznik tiles that adorn the interior walls. After a short walk you will be in St. Sophia, Christendom’s greatest church built by Justinian, and a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Continue to the Topkapı Palace, the residence of the Ottoman Sultans from 15th to 19th centuries. Dinner and Folk Dance show at Kervansaray. B/D
Day 4 Monday, February 20, 2012 Istanbul
Begin the day with a visit to the Mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent. The enormous dome, supported by four columns and arches is an archetectural wonder. Then visit the 11th Century Church of St. Saviour and Kariye Museum in Chora. It contains one of the best-preserved collections of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes anywhere. The afternoon is free for individual pursuits. Some may wish to partake in an age-old Turkish tradition by going to a hamam, or Turkish bath and many centuries-old hamams are still in use by locals and tourists. A visit to the Grand Bazaar is mesmerizing. It covers 65 streets, has more than 4,000 shops and dates back to 1450. B/D
Day 5 Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Istanbul|Izmir|Kusadasi
After breakfast, transfer to the domestic airport for your short flight to Izmir. Called ancient Smyrna until 1923, many believe Izmir is the birthplace of Homer in 850 BC. Alexander the Great favored this city with a citadel atop its highest hill. En route to Kusadasi, visit Sardis dating from the 3rd century AD, and its ancient synagogue, the largest outside Palestine. Some walls still remain and it has a splendid mosaic floor. Dinner and overnight in Kusadasi. B/D
Day 6 Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Kusadasi
Today visit the glorious city of Ephesus, once the capital city of Roman Province of Asia Minor; the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. See the ruins of the Celsus Library, the third richest library of the ancient world. St. Paul came to Ephesus in 54 AD and stayed for three years with his message of Christianity. You also visit the House of the Virgin Mary, who was brought to Ephesus by St. John and the amphitheater. B/D
Day 7 Thursday, February 23, 2012 Kusadasi|Pamukkale|Antalya
Drive to Pamukkale to view the cotton-white travertine cascades or tiers of stalactites formed over thousands of years by the mineral streams which run down the hill. It is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Turkey and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then see the city of Hierapolis with one of the richest cemetery grounds of the ancient world. Continue with a drive over the Taurus Mountain range down south to Antalya and the famous Turkish Riviera. Dinner and overnight in Antalya . B/D
Day 8 Friday, February 24, 2012 Pamukkale|Antalya
In the morning depart to the ancient city of Perge. See the remains of the theatre, a large stadium, baths, a unique Hellenistic city gate and the Agora. Continue onward and visit Aspendos, with its well-preserved ancient theatre still in use. See the ancient aqueduct system. B/D
Day 9 Saturday, February 25, 2012 Antalya
On today’s excursion visit the ancient site of Phaselis nestled around three small clear-water bays and the ancient Mt. Olympos. The town and aqueduct date to 700 BC when is was an important harbor city. Later it was captured by Alexander the Great. If the weather permits, you may choose to swim in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Later, see the site of Khimaira with its “Eternal Flame” coming from natural gas seeping from cracks in the earth. Return to Antalya and enjoy a Farewell Dinner at beautiful “Club Arma.” B/D
Day 10 Sunday, February 26, 2012 Return to U.S.A.
Transfer to the Antalya Airport for return flight at 7:25am on TK2409 and TK 1 to NYC-JFK via Istanbul Arrive home at 2:45pm. B/In-flight
